ECO Committee News - Spring Term 2011

The ECO Committee have had another busy term. Our Biodiversity Area is clean and tidy and ready for everyone to use anytime for our work outdoors. Some classes have used our outdoor trousers a few times, so thanks to the PTA for buying them for us. Thank you to all those who collected Morrisons vouchers. We collected over 1300 vouchers and have now taken delivery of our gardening equipment for the pupils to use from Morrisons. We have also had a ‘Tidy Towns’ grant which we have used to purchase further equipment and to replace the terracotta pots of plants which were broken due to the dreadful winter weather. We have also used this to purchase litter pickers and hi-viz vests. Mr Williams’ (Libby’s dad!) very kind donation was used to purchase much needed gardening gloves for pupils for their regular maintenance jobs in the Biodiversity area.

Our energy saving posters are dotted around the school to encourage us to use less energy by switching off lights etc. We are continuing to monitor our usage of electricity.

We are continuing in our campaign to reduce our waste. We have now replaced the worms in the wormery and are composting our food waste from lunch – we will use this compost on the school grounds. We are continuing to monitor our waste and are recording our weekly recycling bags, to check how much waste we are keeping out of landfill.

This year we won Yellow Pages competition for all Vale Schools! Unfortunately there is no Vale prize this year. Last year we came second and won £100 which was used to purchase battery recharging units and rechargeable batteries for each class. Many thanks to everyone who contributed this year. We will now be entered into the all-Wales competition.

We have celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight this term, encouraging everyone to replace some articles from their weekly shop with Fairtrade items. We focussed on Fairtrade cotton this year in our curriculum activities.

We are hoping to apply for our Green Flag status over the coming months. We will keep you updated!
