Elm - Year 2 / Year 3

Welcome to Class Elm!

 

 

Dosbarth Elm became scientific investigators last week during our topic on Plants and Animals. We explored the parts of a plant, the life cycle of a plant, seed dispersal, mini-beasts, micro-habitats and food chains.

 

During the week we undertook an investigation on wind dispersal, went on a mini-beast hunt and designed a micro-habitat for a chosen mini-beast.

 

We had lots of fun and enjoyed our week as scientific explorers!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas. My name is Mr Thomas and I will be the new teacher of class Elm. I am looking forward to my new role at Llancarfan Primary and working closely with the children and yourselves. I am a very keen sportsman and currently play for a semi-professional rugby team in the Welsh premiership.

We are looking forward to starting out new topic called Superheroes! This project has an ICT focus and teaches children how to gather information from a range of sources and use a range of packages to draw, paint, animate and record sounds. At the heart of this project children will write narrative and fantasy stories using a comic and storyboard format and develop additional skills in the use of speech marks and captions.

 

In this project the children will learn to:

 

  • To use ICT to find and present information including film and animation;
  • To understand the features used by authors and cartoonists in comics and film to describe superheroes;
  • To identify healthy eating habits;
  • To read comic strips and dialogue fluently;
  • To design a comic strip and use it to tell a story;
  • To use music movement and musical instruments to express the characteristics of fictional characters;
  • To identify acceptable behaviour and give reasons for your choices;
  • To identify real life ‘superheroes’ and describe their lives.

 

 

Spelling

 

The children have spelling groups and spelling books. They will be bringing their books home on a Monday and subsequently be tested the following Monday. These support our phonic patterns and specific sounds which are learnt weekly. Please encourage the children to write sentences using several of the spelling words, ensuring the children remember to use capital letters and full stops. These sentences can be written underneath their spelling words in the yellow books.

 

PE Kits

 

We have PE every Wednesday afternoon, with this term having a gymnastics focus. Please could you ensure children bring their kit to school (They can leave it on their pegs).

 

Reading

 

Could we ask that all children bring their reading books to school daily. The children take part in guided reading activities, peer reading and individual reading. Regular reading practise is essential for every child’s progress and we very much appreciate your support in this. Please sign or comment as to their progress at home!

 

Snacks

 

All the children are encouraged to bring in a healthy snack each day for break time could you please ensure that this is clearly labelled to avoid confusion. Fruit can be written on or in a labelled container.
