Dosbarth Cestyll - Year 5

Welcome to Birch Class - Croeso i dosbarth bedwen!

This is the page for Birch Class. We are a class of 22 children, made of 14 year fours and 8 of the younger year fives. It's a great combination and we have lots of fun with our learning together.

Spring term 2.

Welcome back !

I hope you all had an enjoyable and restful half term break.   This term is going to be a busy one and I am excited to introduce our new topic "Heroes and Villains".  This topic will see the children learn about different historical figures who can be classed as heroes and villains.

Helping your child at home.

As always reading, help with spellings and other homework is always encouraged.  I have reminded the children that their spelling books need to be in school every Monday.

Prodigy Maths:

Amongst everything else we will be continuing to use the Prodigy maths game in class and I would encourage you to allow your child to use this at home. The website is available at  (also available as an app) and your child has be given a login and password letter which will grant them access (should this have gone missing please let me know and I can arrange a replacement).

This game is completely free, while there are purchasable extras I would hasten to add that these add nothing to the learning experience and are therefore not required.

As part of heroes and villains topic we've been researching the Welsh artist Gwen John.  We decided to have a go for ourselves.

We hope you enjoy our.......

The children have been asked to learn a short poem as their recital piece.  I chose this piece as I thought it would help us to think of sunnier weather and there are plenty of opportunities for the children to add actions to the words. Please see our piece below - I've included the English translation for reference only - children do not need to learn the English words for the recital.  (A version of this can be heard here )

Science week !

In year five we've been studying forces with Mr Jones! The children were challenged to build a parachute for a spy on a top secret mission. By using their understanding of gravity, air resistance, and impact forces they made sure that the spy back to earth without a bump!

Dropping our newly designed parachute! Ready for the drop!
