Welcome to Castle Class - Croeso i dosbarth castell!
Welcome Back and very Happy New Year to you if I haven’t already seen you! It’s already flying by and we have lots of exciting activities planned.
Our new topic this term is “Disaster Zone”. This project has a geography focus and teaches children about the causes and impact of natural disasters involving water, flooding and erosion and the environmental factors which cause them. At the heart of this project children write reports using factual data with global dimension. In addition children develop skills to write leaflets and present findings from tests and investigations using scientific and geographical language.
Initially children apply their skills and understanding by creating a filmed news report/documentary about the future dangers of flooding, erosion and environmental damage.
In this project the children will learn:
• How to use geographical field work skills on coastlines and rivers;
• How to use data and draw conclusions from it;
• How to make maps and plans and use geographical resources;
• About the environmental impact of global warming;
• How to write reports and a range of other information texts;
• About the characteristics of a range of different rocks and soils;
• How to use multimedia to create film
The children will be resuming their Forest School activities by the end of the month more information will follow.
In support of Welsh Government and local legislation we are continuing to actively promote Llancarfan as a healthy school. Could we ask for your continued support in providing your child/ren with a daily healthy snack for break time, snacks can include all fruits, vegetables and cereal bars BUT please can we ask that children DO NOT bring nuts to school.
Just a few housekeeping pointers:-
All the children will be bringing home “Learning Logs” these are open ended research activities for the children to complete over the following week Monday to Monday. Activities will be Literacy and topic based to further consolidate learning that is taking place in class. Additional, differentiated Maths activities will be sent home when appropriate to support your child’s learning.
The children have spelling groups and spelling books. They will be bringing their books home on a Monday and subsequently tested the following Monday. Supporting home- work sheets will be sent home to be completed and returned to school every Monday.
We have PE on a Tuesday afternoon this term having a Gymnastics focus, please could you ensure children bring their kit to school (they can leave it on their pegs)
Could we ask that children bring their reading books to school daily. The children take part in guided reading activities, peer reading and individual reading. Regular reading practise is essential for every child’s progress and we very much appreciate your support in this. Please sign or comment as to their progress at home so that books can be changed regularly!
Practice makes progress.
Please find below some useful weblinks and documents which are free for you to use at home to support your child with their learning.
