Dosbarth Cestyll - Year 5

This is the page for Castles Class. We are a small friendly and fun class in year five. It's a great combination and we have lots of fun with our learning together.

Welcome to Castle Class - Croeso i dosbarth castell!

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to Castles Class.  I hope you have had a lovely summer.  The children have been eagerly sharing all their news. It is wonderful to see the children again and meet their new friends.  The children have made a wonderful start this week all coming in so confident, happy, and raring to go!  Our Class webpage will be updated regularly with information and photos of the weeks as they go by so please do check it out.

Our topic this term is Gallery.  This project has an art focus and explores the artwork of a variety of artists from different periods of history and develops children’s painting skills using a range of materials. At the heart of this project children learn how to write classically structured poetry and develop additional skills in the use of figurative language and descriptive vocabulary. Children will apply their skills and understanding by opening their own art gallery to exhibit their work on a local and national scale. In this project the children’s’ learning will include aspects such as: • How the work of various artists throughout history has been used to express their views, and how artists’ work reflected the times they lived in; • How artists use various skills to work with different media; • How art and poetry can be used to express the views of the artist or poet; • How to write a poem on a theme using figurative and expressive language; • How to organise a display of artwork; • How to use ICT to find information, display information and create art; • How to use art and poetry to express feelings and opinions.

Healthy schools

In support of Welsh Government and local legislation we are continuing to actively promote Llancarfan as a healthy school.  Could we ask for your continued support in providing your child/ren with a daily healthy snack for break time, snacks can include all fruits, vegetables and cereal bars BUT please can we ask that children DO NOT bring nuts to school.

Just a few housekeeping pointers:-

Please note - homework will be set electronically where possible via their Google classroom.  The children have accessed this platform in class and are familiar with it.  Your child’s login details are attached for your information.  If your child is unable to access the digital platform, then please let me know as soon as possible so hard copies may be made available.  Any paper based homework will need to be submitted via the Class Homework Draw each Monday for retrieval 48 hours later for marking.

Activities will be Literacy and topic based to further consolidate learning that is taking place in class.  Additional, differentiated Maths activities will be set when appropriate to support your child’s learning.  These are to be completed over the following week Monday to Monday

The children have spelling lists issued in spelling books on Monday for testing on the following Monday.  Whilst children will have opportunities to learn their spellings at school, it is important that they practise at home.  Supporting homework - will be set online or subsequent sheets will be sent home.

The children will be bringing home new times table target sheets.  These times table will very much be based on each child’s ability.  Please practise them with your child at home frequently.  We encourage the children to learn to count in their given number, recite their table in order, to know them out of order and to recognise the division of these tables.  Once the children are confident on these, they should return their table sheet to school having achieved their target and progress to the next table.

PE Kits

We have PE on a Thursday afternoon this term having a Games focus, please could you ensure children bring their full kit to school (they can leave it on their pegs)

Could we ask that children bring their reading books to school daily.  The children take part in guided reading activities, peer reading and individual reading.  Regular reading practise is essential for every child’s progress and we very much appreciate your support in this. Please sign or comment as to their progress at home so that books can be changed regularly!

Castles class are scheduled to participate in Expressive Arts (Textiles) every Friday afternoon this term.

Should you have any queries, please phone or email the school so an appointment can be made for a mutually convenient time.

Many thanks for your support!
