Welcome to Dragons class! I hope you all had an enjoyable summer holiday. My name is Mr Thomas and I will be the teacher of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. I am looking forward to working closely with the children and yourselves. I am a very keen sportsman and currently play for a semi-professional rugby team in the Welsh premiership.
We are looking forward to starting our new topic which is called ‘Happiness’. This project focuses on Personal and Social Development and teaches children about the importance of happiness, health, well-being and celebrations. At the heart of this project children will write explanation texts and develop additional skills of sentence writing, use of adjectives and writing to record ideas and experiences.
In this project the children will learn:
• How to understand and appreciate their own feelings and the feelings of others;
• How to eat healthily and how this affects your well-being;
• How to keep safe and how being safe keeps us happy and well;
• How to describe emotions and feelings through drama, dance, art and music;
• About significant happy life events that are celebrated;
• How to collect information in a variety of ways, including photography, art, music, reading, ICT and writing;
• How to present information in an interesting way.
Reception – Phonics
The children will begin to bring home phonics books to help them learn letter sounds, strings and simple CVC blending.
Year 1/2 – Spelling
The children have spelling groups and spelling books. They will bring their books home on a Monday and subsequently be tested the following Monday. These support our phonic patterns which are learnt weekly. Please encourage the children to write sentences using the spelling words, ensuring the children remember their capital letters and full stops. These sentences can be written underneath their spelling words in the spelling books.
We have PE every Tuesday afternoon, with this term having a gymnastics focus. Please could you ensure children bring their kit to school (They can leave it on their pegs).
Could we ask that all children bring their reading books to school daily. The children take part in guided reading activities, peer reading and individual reading. Regular reading practise is essential for every child’s progress and we very much appreciate your support in this. Please sign or comment as to their progress at home!
In support of Welsh Government and local legislation we are continuing to actively promote Llancarfan as a healthy school. Could we ask for your continued support in providing your child with a daily healthy snack for break time, snacks can include all fruits, vegetables and cereal bars BUT please can we ask that children DO NOT bring nuts to school.
Could you please ensure that all snacks are clearly labelled to avoid confusion.
All children will be given homework each week, via ‘Google Classroom’. Activities will be Literacy and Topic based to further consolidate learning that is taking place in class. Additional, differentiated Maths activities will be set when appropriate to support your child’s learning. These are to be completed over the following week, Monday to Monday. The children may complete these tasks in their yellow Learning Log or they also have the option to complete and submit these tasks via Google Classroom.
If you have any further questions or would like to find out more information regarding aspects of school life, please do not hesitate to contact me at the end of the school day.
